FAQ
About Us
What equipment are you planning to buy?
Depending on a lot of things mostly funding and investment we are looking to purchase a boat, compressor and other types of equipment in the future.
What equipment do you have?
At the moment. None. Depending on investors we plan to purchase a Boat and trailer, Compressor and tanks. As the club grows we will decide what else to buy for the club.
Are you planning overseas trips?
Yes, we are looking at planning an overseas trip every 6 months depending on interest. Also we intend to do one domestic trip every 2 months to dive sites on the East Coast.
What is social business?
A social business is a business that operates purely for a social cause. No owner or investor can be financially rewarded by being a part of the business. In our case we strive to make diving affordable, offer a variety of dive sites, create a quality experience, develop new and exciting courses and offer an excellent community experience. We can afford to do these things because all profits at the end of the year are put back into the business. Each year our financial statements will be sent to all members for complete transparency. Individual employees receive a fair market wage and all profits benefit the members.
Why do this?
In a lot of aspects Diving is limited under the for-profit model. In some cases it has lead to cheaper courses and lower standards. It is a capital intensive sport and combine that with the inconsistency of weather it places pressures on dive centres to do things detrimental to the sport. Nothing against some dive centres, there are many in Australia that are doing a wonderful job. However with a non profit, community based model, it allows more freedom for members to experience diversity and the personal growth to enjoy the sport.
What are your plans for the future?
We’re not really sure. World domination? All we know is that there are some wonderful opportunities out there and we are thinking bigger than the rest, and long term. We are not scared to sacrifice profit in the short term to grow something special in the long term.
Dive Maps
How can I conribute to the dive map project?
The main thing that is involved with making these maps is getting the information. Digital stills, video, accurate sketches.. whatever.
We just need accurate information about how the site, or wreck lies today. Once this is all collected then we create a 3D illustration of the site.
If you have any footage of great wrecks that you have dived, please email me and we can see what can be done.
Dive slates, where is that headed?
We have a big aim here. We want to map every popular wreck and dive site in Australia. This is a hard task and requires a lot of work.
Are you up for the task?
We create the information and then have of processed into 3D artwork which we sell for a marginal profit and then invest back into more research.
What material are the dive maps made of?
Our hard slates are made from a laminated waterproof plastic similar to other dive slate products. They will not degrade in the water, however they should not be left in direct sunlight for long periods, like most things i guess…
Diving
How will you decide where to dive?
From the members. We will put out our planned events for the year and members can choose to attend what they like.
Other than that members would be encouraged to plan events of their own within the club.
Will you offer services for Technical divers?
Of course, Tech diving is misunderstood. We aim to reach out to all divers. In future we want to run tech courses, and do more tech diving around Brisbane.
If you are interested in heading this up please call Chris on 0421 510 045.
Will you be diving the HMAS Brisbane?
Yes, they will be scheduled regularly.
Will I need my own gear?
Everything apart from weights and tanks. The club will have tanks initially.
Will I have to be a member to dive with Xplore Dive?
Yes, as we are a club and everything that is owned by the club is for the benefit of the members you will need to become a member before you dive with us. This also allows us to streamline diving days as we know people who are diving are qualified. We can have the paperwork filled out and ready for you to get underwater.
Employment
Can I work for you guys?
At the moment we are starting out and we have positions for people who want to build a club. In the future these may become paid positions, or positions where you get benefits like professional development by us paying for your courses. If you are passionate about diving, marine environment and most importantly people and community, send me an email personally and I will see what we can do? There are more benefits here than just a paid job.
Grammar
What is the past tense of Dive?
After much conjecture and chest puffing, the leadership council (me and some mates) have decided the past tense is ” Dove”
Well, not really, this is just for American women, working in the Philippines. They needed to know. don’t ask…
