Everyday there are heaps of potentially brilliant people sitting around contributing to nothing….
The book Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi says that people crave more leisure time, but once it comes they completely waste it. Most people are putting their personal time to poor use, and they are not happy about it. And most don’t know why?
One reason is that they are not being challenged and they aren’t winning at anything. In fact they are doing the opposite, they are allowing the world to tell them how to live. Here, consume this, let it alleviate your mind from the difficult, but highly rewarding task of thinking.
We are at a time in history where we have some fairly unique problems to solve, and everyday more and more people are giving up, handing their brains over to Lady Gaga, Neighbours, or some other hollow activity. So every year billions of human thought hours, go completely wasted. Wasted at a time where more than ever, we need deep ,collective though, to solve future challenges.
Some may argue that it is culturally relative. Aren’t these couch surfers, and participants of the modern stereotype enjoying themselves as much as someone who goes home and studies something they love for the hell of it?
No way.
Think about it. Have you actually contributed anything to yourself, or humanity after 3 hours of channel surfing. Where you ended up tolerating the best of all the bad channels.
I would argue that had you spend that same time trying something that challenged you, then you may actually see life open up to you? Then you…and the community benefit.
The underwater world is still the least explored or understood. I grew up around the ocean, I played in it. The more I learn the more I wonder.
I don’t have time to waste….
